About trauma

This project is an edition of a study under the same name, which analyzes the stories of Chinese immigrant families who left the country after the Cultural Revolution. Through them, we examine the perspective of two generations to understand the effects that PTSD and generational trauma have had on their lives.

Thus, the design features a color palette that symbolizes the processing of trauma, moving from pain (black), to the wound (red), the bruise (purple), and, finally, the scar (white).

As the book progresses and these color accents transition toward white, the stories feature increasingly less text, showing that, by the end of the book, the trauma has faded and there are no more stories left for readers to “inherit.”

The grid

The grid symbolizes generational trauma: that invisible element that silently shapes the design of every single page, keeping them rigid and uniform.

The narrative unfolds across two points of view. While this grid allows for different compositions within its constraints, whenever we encounter the same story told from another perspective, the composition repeats itself. The grid, like trauma, returns once again to mark the layout.

The cover

The cover displays the book’s title in both English, the project’s language, and Chinese, nod to the testimonies inside. The composition creates a sense of organized chaos that remains bound to the rigidity of the grid. To ease readability, the red accent guides the reader’s eye toward the title and the text’s authors.

Furthermore, printing on translucent paper reveals the book’s binding stitches and inner pages right through the cover, hinting that we are about to explore the raw seams of the collected testimonies.

A flap featuring a red grid completes the piece. This not only reveals the structural build of the cover, but can also be overlaid across the entire book to observe its effect on any composition. The grid, much like trauma, fills everything.
